Title: Verses for the Dead (Agent Pendergast) Pdf
Predictable and formulaic I have followed Agent Pendergast since his adventures in Relic. I've read almost every book that Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have written - as partners and individually. Their capacity for originality, suspense, erudition, and playfulness kept me glued to every page... until recently.I hate to say this, but they "jumped the shark" in The Obsidian Chamber and have now stopped putting effort into characters that deserve more. Verses for the Dead contained stock characters, a predictable serial killer plot, and a complete lack of suspense.I would much rather they stop writing Pendergast novels until they are ready to give him back the time and effort they put into his earlier adventures. Feel free to take a break and explore other series, but please, don't put out a book with a beloved character if your heart isn't in it. Readers can tell. The Authors' Best Recent Effort -- By Far! Take our beloved Special Agent Pendergast and add in a new boss, an unknown as a new partner, and send them to a new locale to solve one "heck" of an interesting crime. As a 37 year resident of Florida I appreciated the descriptions and comparisons of the East and West coasts -- especially the action in the Everglades. Anyone who is unfamiliar with the heat and humidity of South Florida will receive an excellent education from the authors' perspective. They will also receive a primer on some of Florida's flora and fauna, although both are much too large of a subject to be completely covered in a detective/thriller novel.Since most of the characters in this novel are brand new, a certain freshness has been added to the story that makes it quite unique from past adventures. Absent are virtually all of the (strange) characters that we have become familiar with. This of course makes it easier for a new reader to dive into it as a stand-alone novel since these new personalities are endemic to the Miami area and have lived there for most of their lives. It wouldn't surprise me to see some of these characters in forthcoming Pendergast novels. Our new participants are quite different in attire, experience, and attitude from those who still live up North, although the residents of the Southeast Coast of Florida tend to be people who relocated from the Northeast States. Alternatively the Southwest Coast of Florida is mainly home to former Midwesterners, people who gravitate to smaller towns and a more relaxed (and quiet) atmosphere. The addition of a partner (actually a "watcher") to Pendergast's efforts creates a new foil for his barbs and quips. All forms of humor are heaped back and forth between the two of them and I found it amusing and refreshing that someone could basically hold their own with S.A. Pendergast."Verses for the Dead" has a complicated and multi-tiered storyline that will keep you thoroughly entertained while you follow the small clues that are slowly and occasionally uncovered. This novel plays out a very unusual plot line that demands that you as the reader pay attention to detail. If you are able to "keep up" and follow it through, you will be greatly rewarded at the end. In addition you will realize that you may have been introduced to a new cast of characters that are quite talented in their own right and who will probably make an appearance in a follow-up story.Since my mind is attuned to problem solving, I found that I had a hard time putting this book down. If I wasn't older than dirt, I would have stayed up all night just to get to the conclusion. I believe that if you are of a similar mindset that you too will be challenged to walk away from this story before you complete it. Kudos to the authors!Authors have lost their way. I have been a huge fan of these authors ever since I read Relic. Not so much a fan any more. Their stories have been deteriorating into the average crime story. What made them so unique, the supernatural elements, the beloved characters and plot twists that kept you involved and guessing until the end, are no longer present. This is probably the last book of theirs I will buy. From now on I will wait for the book sales and pickit up for a$1.
